Masonry Cookstove Development

Hello all,

Here are some drawings of a cookstove I have been designing that I am interested in getting feedback on.

In particular, @Dwyer_Haney I am interested to get your feedback in the context of the cookstove that you recently built with similar hardware and its performance over this past winter. As far as I remember, your cookstove was slightly simpler… essentially an open box with the cooktop on top. Simple is good.

What do you think of adding this baffle so that the gases can’t make a bee line for the chimney, but instead need to hit the cooktop and make their away underneath it to the exit?

I know there’s a lot of different ways to approach cookstove design in general and, specifically masonry cookstove design. I think, ultimately, a lot of it comes down to the hardware being used. In this case, I am trying to balance proximity of the fire to the cooktop with creating a slightly longer gas flow pathway and having enough room for a functional lintel over the firebox door opening.

To emphasize, this design project has to do with defining a firebox with a cooktop that can be easily coupled to a larger masonry heater (with separate flues) and using the cooktop that we have available. For this reason, there isn’t room for longer downdrafting heat exchange pathways. We are considering carrying larger cooktops in the future.

It will be interesting to see what others might share.

Here’s a great recent post from @Steadybuck showing a completely different design with more heat exchange and optimized combustion:
